14 - Two Weeks To Go!!!

The past 2 weeks have flown by! Lots of things happened: Finals, Showcase, Graduation, and most importantly the first rough draft of Dorian Gray was due to my advisor.

Right before I turned in my rough draft, however, I added a new character - one who isn't in the novel per se, but a similar character to the ones added several film versions. That being said, new character = new song. It was surprisingly easy to write the melody, but next to impossible to write the lyrics. It took about a week and a half to come up with lyrics good enough for the first draft. So the character of Beth and the song, "Don't Let Her Slip Away" (an inner monologue song sung to Beth) emerged.

Rough draft of libretto was submitted last Friday (May 13). My advisor gave me some great advice, and challenged me to write 1 or 2 more new songs. That brings the total number of musical songs (sung or instrumental) to either 27 or 28.

I started my 5 day writing retreat today - trying my best to do nothing else except write, rewrite, format, edit, write some more, and record demos so that our cast can learn the songs.

It's crunch time now. 13 days until the official rehearsal with the whole cast and 14 days until the read through. Hope to see you there!
